Breast Cancer Mermaid™ Art Project

When I created the concept of the Breast Cancer Mermaid™, I had no idea of the magnitude of submissions we would receive nor the tremendous impact this art project would have for women with breast cancer and their loved ones. This inaugural submission received forty-four Breast Cancer Mermaid submissions from thirty-five artists. The majority of our artists were Florida residents, however, we did receive artwork from artists in the United Kingdom, Spain, and one from North Caroline. Artwork was accepted in any medium and any experience level. We received several artwork from veterans who were participating in an Occupational Therapy Workshop run by Wanda Van Harlinger. Peggy Hughes submitted a few colleagues, Catherine Crippen drew her version of a Breast Cancer Mermaid on a seashell she salvaged from the ocean during one of her dives, Dana Watson submitted digital artwork, and Roxanne Campbell provide a treasure box version. All forty-four pieces were on display during the Cinco de Mayo Weekend Health Expo.
As for the impact the Breast Cancer Mermaid™ is having on women with breast cancer, it’s reminding them that despite the ravages of surgery or a mastectomy, they are still just as alluring sensual and beautiful as they ever were; perhaps more so now as they consciously reclaim their inner essence.
Below are the paintings submissions of all our entries starting with our Top Three Winners and our two Honorary Mentions. These artists depicted breast cancer in its various forms and phases. We're so proud of every artist who participated. We will be opening up our submissions again June 1st for our Breast Cancer Mermaid Mural planned for October 2024. Curated by Dr. Charley Ferrer, concept creator and founder of Cancer Tamer Foundation.
